Untangled is a group made, interactive experience as part of the Narrative Spaces and Graphic Design term at the Willem de Kooning Academy . It is a story about the feeling of being stuck inside your own head. Everyone’s experience is unique, and no one will have exactly the same feelings or situations. However, the sensation of being trapped in your thoughts is something many people can relate to.
For most, it’s not just a fleeting discomfort that you feel and then shake off. It often begins as a small sense of unease—something you might not worry about at first. But the longer it lingers, the heavier that feeling becomes, gradually shifting from discomfort to a sense of hopelessness. It’s frightening and challenging—but there is light at the end. Reaching out for help can bring significant relief, and that heavy feeling can gradually fade away.
With this project, we aim to capture the sensation of being stuck in your own head by taking you on a journey through the forest. Much like the emotions people often experience, this story unfolds in multiple phases: from initial discomfort, to feelings of helplessness, and finally, to a sense of relief. After each phase in the video, a white screen appears, giving you, the viewer, a moment to move forward and physically transition to the next stage. Once you’ve navigated all the different feelings, you can turn around and reflect on the journey you’ve overcome.
